1. CONTEXT

Since the 1980’s, Montreal has had a long history of municipal culture distribution. Saint Lawrence and Saint Leonard have offered their communities artistic programs. The emphasis is on classical disciplines like theatre, popular music, and other arts.

The various components of this idea were quickly identified.

These were the initial steps towards what would become a single municipal initiative for cultural accessibility. They established a network for cultural distribution that we now call “Cultural Access”.

The Cultural Access Network has 24 municipal distributors for stage and visual arts.

Many distributors support or encourage artistic residencies that support creativity and provide special connections between citizens and artists. This network engages in approximately 50 mediation activities each year with professionals, different groups and citizens.

The Artwork Collection of Montreal City was also more conscious of the skills and distributions of its distributors. This strategy allows artists from Montreal to display their work in municipal buildings as well as in exclusive galleries and museums.
